This is transportation design and planning work at the professional level. The Transportation Planner applies sound community planning principles and engineering design requirements to the development of conceptual plans and preliminary geometric designs for the Citys transportation infrastructure for pedestrian, cycle, vehicle and transit networks. The position participates in the determination of requirements for the Citys transportation networks, in collaboration with planning, engineering, consulting and other interests, to be implemented in relation to specific property development proposals, civil works and other initiatives. The position is also required to communicate the results and rationale for specific design solutions and requirements to the public, external agencies, and key stakeholders. The position reviews transportation studies submitted by consultants and participates in the process to identify transportation requirements for development proposals. Reporting to the Manager Transportation Planning, the position is expected to exercise considerable independent initiative and judgement in carrying out primary assignments. The scope of work may also involve the preparation of reports, presentations and other materials on transportation planning and policy matters. The position represents the Planning Department at internal and external meetings, and maintains cooperative working relationship with other departments and agencies. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include a Masters Degree in Urban Planning or a university degree in Engineering (preferred) with professional transportation design experience or an equivalent combination of training and experience. The applicant should have a thorough knowledge of design principles and practices for roads and other transportation infrastructure. The position requires a strong ability to express transportation design plans and requirements graphically, verbally, and in writing. Experience in transportation planning and policy work is also desirable. Proficiency with AutoCAD for road design is important. Familiarity with GIS software, and Microsoft Word and Excel, is desirable. Drivers License for the Province of British Columbia, Class 5, is required.

This is a Temporary Full Time opportunity to September 3, 2018, with potential for extension.
