Main Purpose & Function
This Engineering Assistant IV position is responsible for designing City streets, sidewalks, bike lanes, and other miscellaneous construction projects using AutoCAD Civil 3d.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities
This Engineering Assistant IV position is responsible for:
Designing City streets, sidewalks, and other miscellaneous construction projects using AutoCAD Civil 3d.
Designing finished grade elevations for drafters and survey crews.
Designing and reviewing building grade elevations and ramp grades on Development permit and Building permit drawings; reviewing, commenting on, and making recommendations on developer/contract construction drawings.
Preparing Building Grade design letters to applicants.
Preparing design briefs, site instructions and/or other documentation related to design and construction.
Representing the City as a streets design expert in potential legal situations regarding streets design
Performing field investigations prior-to construction.
Assisting the Streets and Electrical Design (SED) Engineers and Survey Supervisor in the administration of the technical services section; working as a team lead, including assigning, scheduling, and overseeing work as required.
Training new staff, assigning and checking the work of drafters, surveyors, and other designers; and performing other related work as required.

Education and Experience:
Completion of a Technical Institution diploma or equivalent in survey technology, civil and structural technology or AutoCAD is required including relevant advanced technical courses and considerable related experience or an equivalent combination of education, training and experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
Extensive knowledge of engineering design principles and methods, including street and transportation design standards, guidelines, and best practices.
Proven ability to direct and supervise the work of subordinates is required, including the ability to assign, schedule and review work, manage workloads, and foster a team environment.
Considerable practical experience in street construction, street layout, and streets design review and improvement of existing standards; demonstrated ability to read and interpret architectural and engineering drawings and specifications.
Good interpersonal skills including proven ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the public, contractors, city staff, and supervisors.
Demonstrated ability to analyze data; ability to work with minimal supervision; excellent organizational skills; ability to exercise sound judgement and to solve problems independently, and strong written and oral communication skills.
The successful candidate will also be proficient with AutoCAD Civil 3D, and have working knowledge of using database software for documentation and file management.
Local area travel is a requirement of this position. Transportation arrangements must meet the operational requirements of the Engineering Services Department.
