Reporting to the Trades Foreman 2, this is skilled technical work at the journeyman level in monitoring, installing, operating, repairing and maintaining the Citys automated traffic signal systems and street lights. The Traffic Signal and Street Light Technician reviews traffic and pedestrian signal operations; installs aboveground and underground duct work and conduits; provides electrical installation, maintenance and repair support for sewage, water and drainage pumping stations and other City facilities; and may supervise the work of one or more subordinates engaged in less skilled tasks. Considerable independent judgement is exercised in dealing with technical work problems involving the installation, repair and maintenance of electrical systems. Duties also include maintaining the computerized maintenance program and inventory for traffic signal and street light installations and repair. Performs related work as required.

Qualifications include completion of grade 12 supplemented by the completion of a recognized Trade Certificate of QualificationElectrician plus considerable experience at the journeyman level or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Thorough knowledge of standard practices, methods, materials, tools and equipment used in the work. Thorough knowledge of the statutes, bylaws, rules, regulations and policies applicable to traffic operations and the Canadian Electrical Code. Considerable knowledge of hazards and safety precautions of the trade; of programmable logic controllers, personal computers and related software, variable frequency drives, SCADA and radio modem systems and motor control systems. Ability to install, operate, monitor, repair and maintain computerized traffic signal systems and other electrical equipment used by the City; to prepare cost estimates, specifications and drawings for electrical, traffic control and street light installations, and to read and interpret plans and specifications; to operate a truck, aerial bucket truck, a variety of small hand tools and electrical testing equipment; to communicate effectively orally and in writing; to deal tactfully and diplomatically with staff and the general public; to assign and supervise the work of staff; and to work in inclement weather. Skill in the use and care of all tools essential to the work. Drivers License for the Province of British Columbia and Certificate of Qualification-Electrician are required. This position requires the incumbent to work on call (within a rotational schedule) as well as work overtime during evening and weekends as operationally required.
